What Is Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a dental specialty. You Might say it relates to general dentistry as cardiology does to general medicine. The specialty concerns itself not only with the proper alignment of teeth, but with the total facial structure in the area of jaws and involves the design, application and control of corrective appliances commonly called braces to treat and correct these problems. Treatment of the Temporomandibular joint is another area of treatment provided.

Why Do Dental And Facial Problems Occur?

There are two general causes. Most malocclusions are inherited. Some of the results of heredity include crowding, spacing, extra or missing teeth, cleft palate and a wide variety of irregularities of the jaws and face. Acquired causes include thumb or finger sucking, tongue thrusting, breathing restrictions by tonsils and adenoids, accidents involving the teeth and face, dental disease and premature loss of primary or permanent teeth. Many of these problems affect facial appearance, as well as the teeth.

The Initial Consultation

Your examination will include an orthodontic evaluation. We will advise you of whether you have the need for orthodontic treatment and what treatment will be required to correct the problem. A financial consultation can also be done by our office staff to go over fees and insurance information. If you do have dental insurance, it would be very beneficial to bring along a completed form with you on your first visit so we may help you in finding out your orthodontic benefit. Any specific questions will be happily answered by Dr. Reiss or any staff member.

Diagnostic Records

This examination will include a detailed medical history and a thorough orthodontic examination, the taking of all necessary x-rays, study models (teeth molds), and photographs of your mouth and face will also be done. These are called diagnostic records and they will allow Dr. Reiss to thoroughly develop a treatment plan for your specific case.

2nd Consultation, And Appliance Placement

We will discuss your diagnosis and treatment plan at this time. The diagnostic records will be presented and reviewed to informyou about the proposed treatment plan. The specifics of caring for your braces and their application will be discussed. Questions are encouraged and will be answered by Dr. Reiss. Following this discussion, the braces will be applied.
