Dr. Horchos ~ Dental Emergencies

The two most common causes of early tooth loss are decay and injury to the teeth. If your child should receive a blow to the face or teeth, the injured tooth may later discolor or develop an infection or abscess. Please cons ult with Dr. Horchos once injury has occurred. A thorough Examination is important to help prevent future problems.

After dental trauma, it is important for you to monitor your child’s teeth that were injured. Please consult with Dr. Horchos should you no tice discoloration, mobility, abscess or pain associated with the injured tooth.

Outlined below are general guidelines to follow in the event of a dental emergency :

Blow to the mouth resulting in loose teeth

  • Apply ice to the area and call Dr. Horchos for evaluation.

Blow to the mouth resulting in cracked, chipped or broken teeth

  • Apply ice to the area and call Dr. Horchos for evaluation. When the nerve of a tooth is exposed after chipping of a tooth, immediate attention is required .

Blow to the mouth resulting in displaced or intruded teeth

  • Apply ice to the area and call Dr. Horchos. Displaced permanent require immediate attention.

Blow to the mouth knocking out permanent tooth

  • Knocked out permanent require immediate attention and action . Notify Dr. Horchos immediately. Time is critical if a favorable long term result is expected!
  • At the same time someone is arranging for Dr. Horchos to see your child someone else should:
    • Locate the tooth. If the tooth fell on the ground gently rinse the tooth in water. Be careful no to disturb the thin fibers attached to the root of the tooth.
    • Replace the tooth back into the socket.
    • If unable to replace the tooth back into the socket place the tooth in cold milk for transport to Dr. Horchos’s office.
    • See Dr. Horchos immediately to stabilize the tooth.
    • Evaluate the need for a tetanus shot.

Please note, primary teeth are not reimplanted. If a primary tooth is knocked out do not attempt to reimplant it. A high degree of infection is associated with reimplanting these teeth. It will be necessary, however, to see Dr. Horchos for an examination and an x-ray of the area.
